If you use a free photo/image hosting service such as flickr.com or photos.blogger.com (via Picasa and Hello), the presumption is that you are releasing the image for public use. However, you can still protect the image and release it under a Creative Commons license. Just use your favourite graphics editing package to add in a layer to your image that has your copyright information on it. And don't forget to keep a copy of the original image without the copyright info, just for posterity.
